Troubleshooting

Export Fails or Doesn't Download

Symptom: Clicking Export does nothing, or the export starts but no file downloads.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Check your browser's download settings — some browsers block automatic downloads
  2. Disable any browser extensions that may block downloads (ad blockers, privacy tools)
  3. Check the browser console for errors (F12 → Console)
  4. Try exporting a single, simple page to rule out content-related issues
  5. Try in a different browser

"License Error" Message

Symptom: Opening the exporter shows a license error or "unlicensed" screen.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Go to Confluence Settings → Manage apps
  2. Find PDF Exporter for Confluence
  3. Check the license status — if expired, click Renew or Buy now
  4. If the license appears active but the error persists, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app (your templates will be lost)

Contact support if the issue continues.

Images Missing from Export

Symptom: The exported PDF is missing images that appear on the Confluence page.

Common causes and fixes:

Cause Fix
Image is hosted on an external server that blocks requests Re-upload the image as a Confluence attachment instead of using an external URL
Image requires authentication to access Use Confluence-hosted attachments
Very large image causing timeout Compress or resize the image before embedding

Cover Page Not Appearing

Symptom: Exports don't include a cover page even though it's configured.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Confirm the template has Cover Page toggled to enabled
  2. Confirm the export is using the correct template (check the template dropdown)
  3. Save the template again and retry the export

Table of Contents is Empty or Missing

Symptom: The TOC page appears but has no entries, or is absent entirely.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Confirm the template has Table of Contents enabled
  2. Check the Depth setting — if set to 1 and the page only has H2/H3 headings, the TOC will appear empty. Increase depth or add H1 headings.
  3. Verify the exported pages actually contain heading elements (H1, H2, H3) — plain paragraph text does not generate TOC entries

Watermark is Not Visible

Symptom: Watermark is enabled in the template but doesn't appear in the PDF.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Check the Opacity setting — if set very low (below 0.05) the watermark may be invisible. Set it to 0.15 or higher.
  2. Confirm Watermark Text is not empty
  3. Save the template and retry

Page Numbers are Missing

Symptom: Page numbers are enabled in the template but don't appear.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Open the template and confirm Page Numbers is toggled on
  2. Check the Position setting — ensure it's not conflicting with a footer that occupies the same area
  3. Note: the cover page does not display page numbers. Check the second page onward.

Template Not Visible to Users

Symptom: A template exists in admin settings but users don't see it in the dropdown.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Check if the template has been archived — archived templates are hidden from users. Restore it to make it active.
  2. Confirm the template was saved successfully (no unsaved draft)

"Export to PDF" Not Appearing in the Page Menu

Symptom: The More actions (···) menu doesn't show the Export to PDF option.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Go to Confluence Settings → Manage apps and confirm the app is Enabled
  2. Refresh the page and try again
  3. Check if the license has expired
  4. Try clearing browser cache and reloading

PDF is Blank or Contains Only the Cover Page

Symptom: The PDF downloads but contains no content (or only the cover page).

Steps to resolve:

  1. Confirm at least one page is checked in the page selection tree
  2. Check that the selected pages have viewable content (not empty pages)
  3. Try a different template to rule out a template configuration issue
