Math and science in Confluence, written as LaTeX.

Confluence Cloud has no math macro, so formulas end up as screenshots nobody can edit. Write the LaTeX you already know, inline or as a block, and it renders on the page for everyone who reads it.

What changes for your formulas

  • Writing

    Equations are typed elsewhere and pasted in as images.

    Type LaTeX in an inline or block macro and see it render as you type.

  • Editing

    Fixing one symbol means finding the source file and redoing the screenshot.

    Open the macro, change the LaTeX, save. The page updates for everyone.

  • Chemistry

    Reaction equations are hand-formatted with subscripts.

    Write them with \ce{}, the mhchem notation chemists already use.

  • Switching apps

    Moving off another LaTeX app means re-entering every equation.

    A migration tool finds and converts them across spaces.

How math works in Confluence

Two macros for writing, admin controls for keeping it tidy, and a way in from other apps.

  1. Write inline or as a block

    The inline macro sits inside a sentence; the block macro gives an equation its own line. Both preview as you type and render with KaTeX.

  2. Look up any symbol

    The LaTeX symbols reference lists every KaTeX command with an example you can copy, from Greek letters to matrices.

  3. Decide who can edit

    Admins can turn on an allow list so only named users edit equations, and see which pages and spaces use the macros.

  4. Bring equations from other apps

    Moving from The Plugin People, Appfire or Narva? The migration tool scans spaces, converts each equation and saves a new page version you can roll back.

LaTeX to start with

Paste any of these into the block macro.

  • Quadratic formula

    Block macro

    Fractions, roots and plus-minus in one line.

    x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}
  • A 2x2 matrix

    Block macro

    Matrices with brackets, using bmatrix.

    A = \begin{bmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{bmatrix}
  • Sum over a series

    Inline or block

    Limits above and below the sigma.

    \sum_{i=1}^{n} x_i^2
  • A chemical reaction

    Inline or block

    Chemistry with the mhchem \ce{} command.

    \ce{2H2 + O2 -> 2H2O}

The apps

Each one installs on its own from the Atlassian Marketplace and runs on Atlassian Forge.

Questions

Can I write LaTeX in Confluence Cloud?

Not natively: Confluence Cloud has no math or LaTeX macro. LaTeX Math for Confluence adds an inline macro and a block macro that render LaTeX with KaTeX, with a live preview while you type.

Which LaTeX commands are supported?

Everything KaTeX supports: fractions, roots, sums, integrals, matrices, aligned equations, Greek letters and much more. Document-level LaTeX such as \usepackage or TikZ drawings is not part of KaTeX. The LaTeX symbols reference on this site lists every command.

Can I write chemical equations?

Yes. Use the mhchem \ce{} command, for example \ce{H2O} or \ce{2H2 + O2 -> 2H2O}.

We use another LaTeX app. Can we switch without retyping?

Yes. The built-in migration tool supports LaTeX and MathJax by The Plugin People, LaTeX Math and LaTeX Math Lite by Appfire, and Easy Math by Narva, plus any other macro by name. Every migrated page gets a new version, so it can be rolled back.

Can I limit who edits equations?

Yes. Admins can switch on an allow list so only the users on it can edit LaTeX macros. Everyone else still sees the rendered equations.

Does it work on Confluence Server or Data Center?

No. LaTeX Math for Confluence is a Confluence Cloud app built on Atlassian Forge.
