Import and Export

Move templates to another Jira site, or keep a copy before a big change. Both are in the ••• menu at the top of the templates list.

Exporting templates

  1. Choose Export templates.
  2. Under Include, tick Descriptions, Additional fields and Assignments as needed. Name, summary, status, category and child items always go.
  3. Tick the templates to export. Search, show All, Active or Inactive, and open any template to check it.
  4. Click Export. The file work-templates-export-<date>.json downloads.

Importing templates

  1. Choose Import templates and drop the .json file on the sheet.
  2. Choose what happens if a template with that name exists: Skip it, Replace it, or Add a copy (named "Name (imported)").
  3. Choose whether to bring their assignments.
  4. Tick the templates to import. Each row says what will happen to it, and opens to show the whole template.
  5. Click Import.

The result says how many were imported, replaced, skipped or failed.

Good to know

  • Assignments are matched on the new site by space key and work type or request type name. Any that don't exist there are left off and listed; the template still imports.
  • A child made from another template is matched by that template's name. Templates used as a child are imported first, so both can come from the same file.
  • Large files are imported 20 templates at a time, with progress for the whole file. If an import stops part way, run it again with Skip it to add the rest.
