Known issues and limitations

These are the current limitations of Markdown Macro+ for Confluence and how to work around them.

The macro

Images must be Confluence attachments

• Issue: Because of Atlassian's data egress rules, images from outside URLs aren't supported.
• Workaround: Upload the image to Confluence and insert it with the attachment picker.

Raw HTML is not rendered

• Issue: HTML tags in the Markdown show as text.
• Workaround: Use Markdown syntax, or the HTML Macro+ app for HTML.

Picking a template replaces the content

• Issue: In the macro editor, picking a template replaces what is already in the editor, without asking.
• Workaround: Pick the template before you start writing. In Edit with Markdown, templates are inserted at the cursor instead.

Attachments are added at the end

• Issue: The attachment picker adds the Markdown at the end of the editor, not at the cursor.
• Workaround: Cut and paste the line where you want it.

Complex math

• Issue: Some LaTeX commands aren't supported by KaTeX.
• Workaround: Check the KaTeX supported functions and look at the preview before saving.

Size limit

• Issue: A macro or template can hold up to 1 MB of Markdown.
• Workaround: Split very large documents into several macros or pages.

Edit with Markdown and New page

Images are added by web address

• Issue: Edit with Markdown and New page add images by their https:// address; they can't upload an image file.
• Workaround: Upload image files in the Confluence editor. Uploaded images are kept as they are.

Some macro syntax isn't converted

• Issue: Math, Mermaid diagrams, [[toc]], :shortcode: emoji and footnotes typed directly into the page are not converted.
• Workaround: Put them in a Markdown Macro+ block (toolbar button Markdown Macro+ block), which renders like the macro.

Formatting that Markdown can't hold

• Issue: Underline, colours, subscript and superscript, alignment, indentation, wide layouts, table widths and cell colours are removed when you publish. A warning lists them first.
• Workaround: Keep using the Confluence editor for pages that depend on this formatting.

Content kept as it is

• Issue: Uploaded images and files, other apps' macros, layouts, smart links, @mentions, custom panels and complex tables appear as {{keep:...}} lines that can be moved or deleted, but not edited.
• Workaround: Edit that content in the Confluence editor.

Export

Diagrams and inline math in PDF and Word

• Issue: Mermaid diagrams export as their source code, block math as LaTeX in a code block and inline math as LaTeX text. Images export as links.
• Workaround: None yet. See Search and export.
