Autocomplete

The LaTeX editor suggests commands as you type and can insert your favorite formulas by name.

Command suggestions

Type a backslash and the editor lists LaTeX commands that start with what you typed.

  • Inside a command the match is exact and case-sensitive. \ve lists \vec, but not unrelated commands such as \overbrace.
  • Shorter names come first.

Placeholders

Commands that take arguments insert placeholders. Choosing frac inserts \frac{}{} with the cursor in the first pair of braces. Press Tab to move to the next placeholder.

Keys

Key What it does
Enter Accepts the highlighted suggestion
Tab Moves to the next placeholder after inserting a command
Escape Closes the list

If what you typed is already a complete command in the list, for example \alpha, Enter starts a new line instead of accepting the suggestion.

Insert a favorite by name

Type two or more letters of the name of one of your favorites, either a formula you saved or one you starred in the Formula Library. Matching favorites appear in the list.

Press Tab to insert the whole formula. Enter still starts a new line, so you can keep typing normally.

Open suggestions on demand

Press Option+Space on Mac or Ctrl+Space on other systems to open suggestions anywhere in the editor. Your favorites are listed first, then commands.

Turn off suggestions while typing

Open Editor Preferences from the editor footer and switch off Suggest commands as you type. The list then stops appearing while you type. The Option+Space or Ctrl+Space shortcut keeps working.
