Markdown Importer for Confluence CloudRe-import and Update Pages
When your markdown changes, import the same files again under the same parent page or folder. The importer recognizes the pages it made last time and updates them, instead of creating copies with new titles.
How to update pages
- Open the importer and add the new version of your files (the same
.zipor folder, with changes) - Choose the same space and parent as the earlier import
- Wait a moment while the importer checks what's already there. A blue banner shows what it found
- Review the labels next to each file, then click Start Import
Only files that changed are updated. Each update is a new page version, so earlier versions stay in the page history.
What the labels mean
| Label | What it means | What the import does |
|---|---|---|
| Updates page | The file changed since the last import | Updates the page with the new content |
| Unchanged | The file, its images and the import settings are the same as last time | Leaves the page as it is |
| Edited in Confluence | Someone edited the page in Confluence after the last import | Leaves the page as it is, so their edits aren't lost |
| Already here | A page with this title is in the same place, but the importer didn't make it (or it was imported before re-import existed) | Leaves the page as it is |
| Existing folder | The folder from the last import | Uses it; new pages go inside |
| New | A file that wasn't in the last import | Creates a page |
To update a page labelled Edited in Confluence or Already here anyway, click Update anyway next to it. To update every unchanged page too, use Also update the unchanged pages in the banner. To leave every page as it is and only add new files, click Keep pages as they are.
How pages are matched
A file matches a page in the same place as last time: under the parent you choose, inside the same folders, with the same file path. Titles the importer changed to keep them unique (for example setup (2)) are matched too.
- Import under the same parent. Under a different parent, the files are new there, so they're imported as new pages.
- Moving or renaming a page in Confluence means the importer no longer finds it in its place. The next import creates a new page for that file.
- Files you removed from your markdown are not deleted from Confluence.
Images
Images are updated with the pages that use them. An image that's the same file as last time isn't uploaded again. A changed image gets a new attachment version.
Large imports
When Confluence asks apps to slow down, the importer pauses and continues by itself. A notice shows how long it's waiting. Keep the tab open until the import finishes.
Good to know
- The importer keeps a small record of the pages it made in each folder (a hidden content property on the parent page or folder). This is how it recognizes them next time. It doesn't change what readers see.
- Folder records need folder permission. After updating the app, a site admin approves the new View folder data permission once in Connected apps (how to update an app). Until then, folders are matched by title and place.
- Import settings count as changes. If an admin changes how Mermaid diagrams or math are imported, every page is labelled Updates page on the next import.
