Markdown syntax

Works everywhere
First line\
Second line

A backslash at the end of the line. Visible, so it survives editors that trim spaces.

A single line break in the source is joined into the same paragraph. To break the line without starting a new paragraph, end it with a backslash or two spaces, or use
. For a new paragraph, leave a blank line.

Questions

Why does pressing Enter not create a new line?

Markdown treats a single newline as a space, so you can wrap long lines in the source. GitHub issue and pull request comments are the exception and keep single newlines.

How do I add a line break inside a table cell?

Use
. A real newline would end the table row.

How do I add extra blank space between paragraphs?

Several blank lines collapse into one. Use
on its own line, or with blank lines around it.

Line break in Confluence

In a Markdown Macro+ macro, the live preview shows straight away whether a line joined or broke, which is the quickest way to catch trailing spaces your editor removed.
