\neq is the inequality sign. The \not prefix slashes any relation symbol, so \not\equiv, \not\subset and so on also work, though amssymb provides nicer dedicated versions for the common ones.
All ways to write it
| Command | Use | Package | Copy |
|---|---|---|---|
\neq | also \ne | none | |
\not= | generic negation slash | none |
Example
a \neq b \implies a - b \neq 0A simple inequality statement.
Questions
How do I negate other symbols?
Put \not in front: \not\in, \not\subset, \not\equiv. amssymb has \notin, \nsubseteq, \nequiv with better spacing.

Using not equal in Confluence
Confluence Cloud has no built-in LaTeX. With LaTeX Math for Confluence you add a math macro to any page, type \neq and it renders inline or as a block, with a live preview while you edit. Every command on this page renders there without extra packages.
