\cap gives the elements two sets have in common. \bigcap is the large form with limits for intersecting a whole family. The glyph looks like a cap, which is the mnemonic.
All ways to write it
| Command | Use | Package | Copy |
|---|---|---|---|
\cap | binary intersection | none | |
\bigcap_{i=1}^{n} | big operator with limits | none |
Example
A \cap B = \emptyset \iff A, B \text{ are disjoint}Disjoint sets have empty intersection.
Questions
Why is my \cap too small in a big expression?
\cap is a binary operator and does not scale. Use \bigcap for the large operator with limits.

Using intersection in Confluence
Confluence Cloud has no built-in LaTeX. With LaTeX Math for Confluence you add a math macro to any page, type \cap and it renders inline or as a block, with a live preview while you edit. Every command on this page renders there without extra packages.
