Lowercase delta is the small quantity of epsilon-delta proofs and the Dirac delta. Capital delta means a change or difference (Δx), the discriminant, and the Laplacian. The partial-derivative ∂ is a separate symbol.
All ways to write it
| Command | Use | Package | Copy |
|---|---|---|---|
\delta | lowercase δ | none | |
\Delta | capital Δ, change in / Laplacian | none | |
\partial | curly ∂ — not a delta, but often confused | none | |
\varDelta | italic capital | amsmath |
Commands marked with a package need that \usepackage line in a LaTeX document.
Example
\Delta x = x_2 - x_1, \qquad \delta(x) = 0 \text{ for } x \neq 0A finite difference and the Dirac delta.
Questions
How do I write the Dirac delta?

Using delta in Confluence
Confluence Cloud has no built-in LaTeX. With LaTeX Math for Confluence you add a math macro to any page, type \delta and it renders inline or as a block, with a live preview while you edit. Every command on this page renders there without extra packages.
